Derek has been one of the leading foodservice managers in the UK for social care for over a quarter of a century. The bulk of his career has been in the local government care sector supporting long term care foodservice, day care and meals and wheels programmes. The latter has grown from a declining service to one that is thriving despite national trends for this type of service. He has also been responsible for staff well being and awareness programmes.
He has held regional, national and international posts in the National Association for Care Catering and HCI. He has sat on many industry boards and working groups developing industry standards and has been recognised by industry with many individual and collective awards for his work. These include the top honour the Public Sector Catey Award ( Cateys are the Oscars of the UK catering industry) and three national marketing awards for the meals on wheel service and Nutrition and Hydration Week.
Derek continues to be one of the three leads for Nutrition and Hydration Week, which over the past five years has become a global event. This event built on social media has amongst other things provided a platform and enabled a legacy to be built for good nutrition and hydration worldwide.
His passion for enabling others to showcase the great nutrition and hydration work they deliver in the health and care arena, is what still drive him on today to improve services for those vulnerable people in most need.
